Urinary Dilution in Potassium Deficiency ‡
نویسندگان
چکیده
One of the earliest manifestations of potassium depletion is a reduction in the ability of the kidneys to elaborate a concentrated urine.' This defect has been shown to result at least in part from a decrease in the concentration of sodium in the interstitial fluids of the renal medulla and papilla.9 The disturbance in renal concentrating ability may exist without impairment of glomerular filtration rate; renal extraction of para-aminohippurate'0 and the ability of the kidneys to excrete a highly acid urine, however, are frequently deficient.' The present experiments have explored the ability of potassium-deficient animals to excrete a dilute urine in response to a water load. In contrast to certain other diseases of the kidney accompanied by hyposthenuria, the kidneys of potassium-depleted animals appear to dilute the urine normally. Studies of urinary dilution and concentration in two patients with severe potassium deficiency are also reported.

Abstract Background: Water and electrolyte balance are critical for the maintenance of general health. Exercise creates much variation in renal homodynamic and electrolytes excretion. Sauna is also an extreme hot environment placing an individual in heat stress. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of one session aerobic activity and sauna on serum and urinary sodium and potass...
متن کاملRole of water balance in the enhanced potassium excretion and hypokalaemia of rats with diabetes insipidus.
1. The role of water balance in the hypokalaemia of rats with diabetes insipidus (DI rats) was studied. 2. After a 3-day balance study DI rats had a lower muscle potassium content, and plasma [K+], and the urinary excretion of potassium in response to oral KCl loading was reduced when compared to normal rats. The hypokalaemia was found to be associated with elevated concentrations of potassium ...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Zinc Deficiency on the Risk of Urinary Tract Infection in Children
Background Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common infectious disease among children. Deficiency in micronutrients such as zinc, is believed to play a role in predisposing children to UTI. However, rare studies have been conducted on this subject. The present study aimedto compare the serum zinc level between children with UTI and normal cont...
متن کاملThe effect of uncomplicated potassium depletion on urine acidification.
Studies were performed on normal human subjects to determine the effects of potassium depletion on urine acidification. Depletion was induced by ingestion of a low potassium diet either alone or in combination with a potassium-binding resin, and the response of each subject to an acute ammonium chloride load in the potassium-depleted state was compared to his normal response. Urine pH was signi...
متن کاملExternal quality control of urinary methyl malonic acid quantification - announcement of a pilot study.
Methylmalonic acid (MMA) accumulates in the body in cases of cobalamin (vitamin B12) deficiency because of impaired metabolization of methylmalonyl CoA to succinyl CoA by methylmalonyl CoA-mutase, a cobalamin-dependent enzyme. Therefore, MMA represents a functional marker of cobalamin deficiency (1). It is widely accepted that MMA measurement is useful and necessary if serum cobalamin concentra...
